1. Call Yourself Ready to Write in French

English Summer Camp Megeve Job

As you are assigned to lead English lessons and activities most of your young campers may be French speaking children. Just like any other cultural experience, dinners, breaks and tours, and you will be surprised by how much French is used around you. Of course, knowing the language to certain extent proves tremendously useful in establishing relationships with the campers apart from the classroom context. Extra points if you can incorporate some of the vocab that camp kids use such as piscine meaning pool or randonnée meaning hike.

2. Carry Summer and Winter Clothing

A major point which should serve an important reminder that weather in the alps can be unpredictable is the fact that. Normal for most days was the sun and t-shirts, but we also had a day of snow through which we survived wearing hats and jackets by the fire. If you dress for the hot then be sure you also dress for the cold then you’ll be well prepared. Of course, do not forget about sunscreen you are going to spend a lot of time in the fresh air.

3. It is actually okay not to always sleep at Camp

There is one thing I never would have expected about Real Life. I’m surprised at how often we go on overnight trips. We slept in tents, in mountain refuges and played the fun sleepovers at our summer cottage near the lake. Come prepared to play, and come prepared to sleep outside.

4. Expect Long Days

English Summer Camp Megeve Job

It may be fun to be able to get to play with your campers during activities, but be ready to have long days. Besides teaching, directing other group activities, managing meals and sleeping arrangements, you will accompany children for hiking and swimming and shopping for food in supermarket. Ensure you have enough rest during free time so that you are ready to have lots of energy all through the day. Believe me, children are very destructive and will exhaust you most of the time.

5. You Might Pick Up a Sport

Camp activities include climbing walls, tennis courts, pools, ziplining and more all at camp, as well as the famous Megeve ski jump is only a stone’s throw away, so who knows, you may well come off camp with skills that can be demonstrated back in the real world. I started mountain biking and wake boarding at the previous summer. Going for lessons and trial on new sports is pretty amazing especially if it is in the mountain life sort of thing.

6. You Can Travel on Weekends

Strange to say, having weekends off to roam was one fantastic feature of the job. The train and bus will enable us to go for other attractive places such as Annecy, Chamonix and Geneva amongst others. One day I went into actual Italy and Switzerland for a day trip. When else can you sightsee in multiple countries within a weekend? Do as the tourists do when you are out of school and make the best out of such days.

7. They Are Friends You Will Get to See Across International Borders

Along with the French campers many English programs involve children from dozen of other countries including Russia, Mexico Italy and China. Basically as a counsellor you interact with these awesome campers from around the world you normally have no business meeting. I also have friends from all over the world because of camp in Megeve.

8. Get Used to Cafe Culture

Over the French people are quite laid back when it comes to meal times particularly breakfast. From simple conversations while waiting to grab a cup of café au lait in the morning before activities begin, we would spend more than an hour. Equally at night town would be filled with people eating in the terraces even as late as night. Try to move on to a more leisurely pace and sit down for meals that last longer than usual.

9. Travel Back in Time to the Swiss Alps

Besides getting the kids to speak better English which is the whole reason behind the camp, also welcome every chance to try real alpine life. We took lessons at local dances representing classic Savoyard folk traditions, witnessed athletic cheese rolling contests on the slopes and joined summertime fire ceremonies on June 21st. English classes with other practices of the community for great days.

10. Cherish the People and Place

Most importantly, spend every beautiful moment with your wonderful campers and other counsellor in cordial environment of Megeve. Take as many photos in your mind as you’d like of standing on a paddle board in the middle of bright green lakes with high snowy mountains in the background or of singing silly songs and telling funny stories by the fire with the stars above. This is what it looks like to create summer memories.

Conclusion

It is for sure going to be a great deal of work being employed at an English summer camp in Megeve job, but its going to be magical. Despite the fact that you can be empty for the day as much as you plan such as I did, accept whatever each new day comes with. One has to be flexible and be ready to do anything at any one time. You will come home with friends for life, fantastic memories behind your back and renewed spirit till the next summer in the Alps.
